Discourse about new superhero media I’ve been seeing lately is honestly so dumb. Batman and Superman didn’t pop out of their mothers wombs as full grown men in super funky outfits.
Yes, a lot of recent media only focuses on their more adult years but just because a new media shows them as young men doesn’t mean it’s ‘inaccurate’
My Adventures With Superman shows a new superman, one who is goofy and as awkward as any young person doing something new. And I love it! It’s a breath of fresh air!
And someone said that the latest Batman movie with Robert Pattinson isn’t Batman cause he looks like ‘a depressed teen’. Newsflash it’s a young batman he isn’t one that we are used to seeing in the movies. He’s new at his job! (And Bruce probably was a depressed teen, he literally witnessed his parents murder and dressing as a bat isn’t the logical option for someone with a healthy mind)
“This isn’t what the fans want!” Yes it is! It’s what I want! I want goofy superheroes! I want them to be kind to each other and have fun!
(Wayne Family Adventures is literally getting more reads than the recent Batman comics and that means something)
Just because a piece media doesn’t depict your favorite version of a character doesn’t mean that it’s wrong. I like these new stories, I am relate to a new Batman and a young Superman far better than what I saw in Batman vs Superman. I hate to break it to you but, they’re for young new audiences. And as a member of the young new audience I think I have the authority to say that It Is Good.
And just cause something is goofy or different doesn’t mean it’s bad
Facts on facts! It says a lot that despite the massiveness of the DCEU & Snyder’s “interpretations” of the characters, my absolute favorite stuff in the recent years of the franchise of both characters has been unique & actually refreshingly original & blatantly earnest projects like: My Adventures With Superman, films like The Batman (2022), and podcast Batman The Audio Adventures & Batman Unburied!
All of them manage to draw me in & be incredibly memorable & all with a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the obscene amounts of money major studios have shoveled into their cinematic universe burn pits over the last decade (?) nearly. Excluding the case of Reeve’s The Batman obviously but then even it was less expensive that the Snyderverse movies & yet still leagues more intriguing & exciting.
Slightest possible Zelda TotK Spoilers but while a lot of people have rightfully praised the absolute horrifying redesign of the Gibdo enemies in the game, I personally have always hated Like Likes since OoT even more so than either Gibdos or even ReDeads so their redesign has managed to put me off of them even more. The person who thought to add in elements to essentially turn Like Likes into giant-sized parasitic worms needs a raise & needs to be incarcerated. That’s not even to mention that in terms of the base level enemies, they also are among the most tedious to fight ie they require more steps than just standard melee attacking.
I complain but honestly as a completely amateur game designer, I feel that all good games need at least one genuinely creepy enemy that can actually scare a player and funnily enough, toss Like Likes in with Gibdos & the game’s replacement for Floormasters, Zelda TotK manages to have three 😭
I have a bit of a horror film niche that I adore and that is asian found footage/documentary style movies. Can’t get enough of them and there are so few out there that I’ve been able to find.
Fun fact: Tenochtitlan fell in 1521. From 1603 onwards, large numbers of honest-to-god fricking Japanese Samurai came to Mexico from Japan to work as guardsmen and mercenaries.
Ergo, it would be 100% historically accurate to write a story starring a quartet consisting of the child or grandchild of Aztec Noblemen, an escaped African slave, a Spanish Jew fleeing the Inquisition (which was relaxed in Mexico in 1606, for a time) and a Katana-wielding Samurai in Colonial Mexico.
Also a whole bunch of Chinese Characters BECAUSE MEXICO CITY HAD A CHINATOWN WITHIN TEN YEARS OF THE FALL OF THE AZTEC EMPIRE.
Super Mario Wonder, Penny’s Big Breakaway & Princess Peach’s Untitled Game pushed today’s Direct into the stratosphere!
After catching up with One Piece last month, I took the time to finally dig into a lot of currently running series from Shonen Jump/MangaPlus I’ve missed out on these past few years (Beyond starting & dropping JJK & Demon Slayer). Excited that returning has enlightened me on some real gems like Dandadan, Sakamoto Days, Choujun X, Ron Kamonohashi - Deranged Detective, Cipher Academy, Skeleton Double, Magilumiere, Ichinose Family & Fabricant 100.
Fabricant 100 in particular has been intriguing me for just how much it gives me vibes of FMA, Hellsing & Claymore shot through with a bit of D. Gray-man. The character of No. 100 is just so interesting as a deuteragonist for her hidden ruthless nature (thinking of an incredible moment with No. 100 simply sitting in a chair that gave me a chill lol) & which causes her partner Ashibi to contemplate what he’s willing to tolerate for his goal & the manga’s overall themes about the worth of self-sacrifice & the limits of trust.
I’m honestly really digging the overall output of the post-Chainsawman Jump manga which I think has influenced several creators to push the appealing oddity & embrace the darker or more mature aspects they want to include in their stories & editors eagerly accepting it. Maybe it’s just my own false perception due to having not read a lot of what’s come & gone through Jump for the last 4 decades 😄
Aside from OP, JOJOLANDS & Chainsawman obviously: Fabricant 100, Dandadan, Magilumiere, Choujin X, Sakamoto Days & Ron Kamonohashi are my personal Top 6 picks of current/recent Jump series (which I’ve read so far of course) & highly recommend at least the first 5 chapters of each for anyone interested in something new!
